Giclée Fine Art Prints
(pronounced: zhee-CLAY)
Giclée prints are museum-quality fine art prints using state-of-the-art digital technology. Artists, galleries, and museums worldwide recognize giclée as the finest methodology for producing accurate archival fine art prints.
The Process
- A historic map or art image is “captured” on a scanner to produce a high-resolution digital image.
- Depending upon the artwork and other factors, the digital image is enhanced (repaired and/or edited) using Photoshop image editing software.
- In some cases imperfections are repaired using the image editing software. In other cases the imperfections from the original artwork are considered to be of historic significance and are left alone.
- Printing is done one image at a time on high-resolution 6- and 7-color ink-jet printers using fade-resistant archival inks, and archival paper.
The result is a museum-grade fine art print that will last a minimum of 100 years.
Jack Duganne, a fine art printmaker, coined the term giclée to denote prints made from a digital source and printed on inkjet printers. The term itself is adapted from the French “le gicleur” meaning “to squirt, spurt, or spray.”
While the process was invented in the early 1990s, advances in technology have lead to a three-fold increase in resolution and archival qualities.
